YANTRA

25th feb, saturday night live
Yantra is a meeting ground of musicians. A platform where musical minds can exchange styles, thoughts and musical action. So jazz meets Hindustani styles with Carnatic idoms and rhythmic patterns and beats while always maintaining a strong melodic core. Yantra performed recently at the world music festival on June 18th at the Alliance Francaise Bangalore.

Jagadeesh M.R – Self taught guitar player, composer and founder, Jagadeesh has been playing with pop, rock and jazz bands since the last 20 years. His influences from jazz and ‘jamming’ with different musicians of different styles has resulted in the band Yantra.

Prakash Sontakke – Hindustani vocalist, Hidustani style Hawaain guitar player and composer, Prakash has been at the forefront of fusion music playing in bangalore. His versatile playing from Hindustani style to western is a treat to watch.

Madhuri – Husky voiced Madhuri combines rare jazz voicings with influences from Susheela Raman, Sheela Chandra, Ella Fitzgerald to name a few. Madhuri has been singing since the nineties with various pop and jazz bands.

Prashaanth Davidson – Prashanth is the most sought after bassist in Bangalore today. His jazz playing is full of expression and feel. Prashaanth has backed most of the singers and bands in bangalore today.

Karthik Mani – Son of the illustrious T.A.S Mani & rama Mani, Karthik is evolving as a drummer and percussionist in his own right. Karthik has played and performed with International artists like Charlie Mariano besides accompanying senior carnatic musicians on the ghatam and mridangam.

full moon weekend


nate linkon
has been playing music for the past 12 years. he has played in chicago for the past 6-7 years. he studied jazz studies at North Western at chicago. nate has done numerous gigs from private parties to large concerts, in london, paris, austria, italy. he also opened for george clinton at chicago. nate has presently moved to india for the past 7 months.

Sharik hasan
is from bangalore. he studied classical music as the bangalore school of music doing both the trinity and royal school of music exams. he is presently in his 4th years at Oberlin, ohio, which co incidently has the best music conservatory in the world. there is where he picked up jazz with a fellow student.

K N Prakash

has been playing music with several Jazz, Fusion and Progressive Rock bands in Bangalore over the last 6 years. He is greatly influenced by Jaco Pastorious and Stanley Clark, imbibing their techniques in his own style. He is also inspired by the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie.

Shrive Alive is a New York native guitarist and singer performing for the first time in India. He has worked with a wide range of people; from Mississippi bluesmen R.L. Burnside and T-Model Ford, to NYC rappers Nas and Notorious B.I.G. His work has been featured on major movie soundtracks like Ali and Men In Black. Shrive currently leads his own band in America and is active in the New York City downtown music scene. At Opus he will perform solo on acoustic guitar, featuring classic American blues as well as original material.

MARIA PETERZON – SINGER (Sweden)

She studied at the Conservatory in Copenhagen for Etta Cameron. Now she is one of few teachers who teaches the same technique as Etta. Maria work as a song teacher in Malmo & Landskrona.

STEFAN PONTINEN – VIOLINIST (SWEDEN)
Stefan Pöntinen is a French & Swedish Governments scholarship grantee for special artistic activity. He is a well respected performer & composer of repute & has been with Orchestras in Scandinavia, Spain, & several European countries. In 1995 he founded the Ensemble Pöntinen & is member of SOS – Spirit of Sweden, whose artistic activity of art exhibitions & Concerts are well known in the country. He is also member of Galleri Rostrum in Malmo. He is the Winner of the TRIADE competition (Ahrenshoop, Germany) for his piece “Karma”.

Stefan has had vast & varied experience playing at the Malmo Theatre Orchestra & with reputed Orchestras in Scandinavia, Spain & other European countries. He has taught violin at the award winning Music School in Malmo, apart from workshops, courses & lectures. Other recordings & releases include ‘Protocol 8’, ‘Hanforelsens tid’, Oggi come Oggi’ among others.

He is a popular & well known performer who frequently plays together with his brother, the eminent Swedish pianist Roland Pöntinen, singers & in ensembles. He has performed with the great Cellist Svante Henryson who received rave responses at the Encounter 2004. He is an avid composer & his works are immensely popular in his homeland & other European countries. Stefan is on a mission to travel in India to imbibe its vast culture, interact with its people & make music.
